REVERSE APPLICATION DESIGN ////
Perspective dictates design. We derive solutions relative to problems and tend to see our tools and strategies according to their applications. Solution designers often fall into the trap of allowing the problem to choke the solution or to view the utility of their tools too narrowly.
We have found that intentionally (and accidentally) pivoting our perspective relative to the problem reveals new dimensions for innovation. In doing so, we approach our initiatives from both a problem and solution orientation. In some cases, we focus first on identifying the problems or critical points in a given area and design our solution for it accordingly. We build the team, define the objectives and design parameters, utilize and prototype with our different technologies – exploring, building and acquiring others when necessary – and launch and test our solution.
But we are also solution-oriented, in that, we can begin with a solution and design from it mission-related applications that best exploit its core functions. The versatility of our portfolio technologies enables potential functionality in a multitude of different areas. This model expands the market potential of our technology partners and brings technology to the aid of our causes – something that does not happen by market forces alone.
In practice, reversing our perspective on solution design has helped bring the experience and best practices of one industry to the aid of another; helped foster cross-industry synergies and supported our overarching design strategy of transdisciplinary collaboration.
